What do gay pride parades have to do with conspiracies to destroy Russia? How has the word for “tolerance” become a term of abuse? In this talk, we will hear how homophobia and fears of “political correctness” are used to reinforce the sense that Russia is surrounded by enemies.
Eliot Borenstein is a Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies, Collegiate Professor, Senior Academic Convenor for the Global Network, and Acting Chair of East Asian Studies at New York University. He has published widely on Russian modernism and postmodernism, popular culture and cultural studies, and sexuality and literature. He is the author of the forthcoming Plots against Russia: Conspiracy and Fantasy after Socialism (Cornell University Press).
